Stereotypes about youth.
Stereotypes about youth
Name and describe three stereotypes about young people.
- Talking back to parents is a lower class behavior
- Dark skin lower class are gang members
- Irresponsible because they don't always make the right decision
what beliefs about children/ youth/adolescent shape these stereotypes and how are these stereotypes impacted by race/ class/gender/ sexuality?
Media has a big impact in shaping stereotypes. Youth are portrayed as fragile individual, who needs help constantly because they're not capable of making their own decision. Race, gender, class and sexuality contributes a lot to how stereotypes are shaped. one stereotype might fit one group of youth because of their skin color and not fit another group because they don't fit the specific description. All this demonstrates how we live in a world in which we allow the media to brainwash into making decision in which affects other individuals deeply into the point many take their own life. This should be the time that we all think about what we put out there.
Share a memory(recent or distant) when you experience prejudice as a young person
I remember two summers ago I was working at a elementary school in Pawtucket. one day I went to work my friend\coworker who was white walked in with no Badge and she wasn't stopped by the principle and I walked in right after her and I was followed by the principle because I had to proof to her that i worked there. That was the most uncomfortable experience I have had as a black woman.
Thank you for your post Sonia. I appreciate your analysis of youth stereotypes and the links between race and class. I also agree that media plays a significant role, but I wonder what other systems and institutions might also be a part of this--how do schools, youth programs, criminal justice systems also impact these stereotypes? Finally, thank you for sharing that story--that sounds like a deeply hurtful and alienating experience in your place of work.
